Warmth of Heaven

A few book reviews this evening!

62. Edgedancer by Brandon Sanderson. A fun little novella that is only right and proper to read when you’re doing a Stormlight Archive re-read! I’ve read this once before and while I enjoyed it again this go-around, I must confess it was a little odd to read it and realizing the first good chunk was lifted (oh dear) straight out of one of the interludes from Words of Radiance. Still, despite that repetition, still enjoyed this. Lift’s a bit ridiculous at times but yes she is also rather awesome. And the ending was unexpected but rather heart-warming. Also for such a little novella, so much world-building! Appreciated the look into the western lands of Roshar. I can’t say I read this book often, but I will continue to re-read every time I’m doing my SA re-read! A lot of charm for such a little book.

63. Psalms of Praise – A Movement Primer by Danielle Hitchen & art by Jessica Blanchard. A lovely little encouraging book full of good verses and gorgeous art! This book is probably best for small toddlers (ages 1-2 or so?) but even I much enjoyed the (quick!) read of this book. Verses that point to God and talk about different postures/movements that one ought exhibit before the Lord! Simple, but what is better than reading the Word to our small children? And I mentioned this briefly already, but the art is simply beautiful. Quality children’s book all around. It is never too early to start reading verses out of Scripture to our small ones.

moments counting

Many stanzas unrelated yet not perhaps entirely

We walk down those faded corridors
marked with water stains
and faded ink
and broken promises
hand in hand we go
with light steps
and broken hearts

the light shines down on your face
and your eyes tell the story
that your lips never would
as they move to count down
i raise a finger to shush
i already know the time
yet you move closer

She stands upon the doorstep
tilting her head curiously
and as i raise my hand
and start to pretend
i change my mind and say
let’s have a nice long talk
as we go for a walk alongside
the sea

hello my darling let’s not pay the toll today
for it’s been paid so many times before
surely it counts for something
the frequency of our visits
maybe a loyalty program of sorts
instead spread some jam and butter upon that scone
and i’ll pour you a cup of tea
and let’s open the book and dive deep into what we’ve read
and talk lit and art and most of all what it means
to be immersed in this systematic theology

Reading upon a sofa sprawled out all comfy in my way
and upon the table burns a candle marking the time since
and she walks in and stares at me and says
really have you moved at all?
and of course not i say although that’s not entirely true
for i may have gotten up to change the music once or twice
but in sentiment she understands and smiles and rolls her eyes
and leans over and pats my leg and tells me to relax
i wish i could fall into a book like that

how does theology affect our lives i wonder
and though some may say it really doesn’t
i would argue then what’s the point
for then your theology’s bereft
and all your thinking has no merit
true true they answer back and so why bother?
i turn to them and say consider this
if God’s real and true and all that?
and if furthermore he’s written to us of himself?
well i’d like to understand
at least in such feeble way as this mind dares to grasp
understanding they say is futile for how can what is finite
comprehend the infinite
it can’t
truly
for only when the infinite and finite has somehow married
can there be a listening to the radio that is now tuned
but how – there can be no such
and yes i also wondered until i considered that this question
has been answered
hence why i’m reading theology
and seeing the poetry of God
this strange, wonderful symmetry that is god made man
and sent down from eternity to walk this earth
and then die upon a tree
this sweetest simplest theology
of God who made a way to be known by feeble, finite, little ol me

she tenderly caresses the cover of the book before her
wondering if she dares to open the cover
will the writing match the gorgeousness of the artwork?
she hears a whisper
yes
taste and see

One more girl hangs out the 3rd floor window
and shouts down to me of what she’s found
what is that i say
cry louder!
and she says i won’t but i’ll do you one better
i’ll come down

the sunset ripples through the sky
and i breathe in deep the last remnants
and wait for my God to draw me nigh

Doorways

come across the street please
for you can see it’s barely raining
and bring me a coffee if you would
and before opening time
we’ll lie down on the carpet
in the record store
and look up at the cracked and faded ceiling
as we discuss all that’s come before
and i’ll try not to burn my tongue
as we sip this bittersweet coffee
and talk and pray and wait
for the rising of the sun

Once Upon a Time Whispers Whispers in the Dark

A few books this Monday afternoon!

59. Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson. Still one of the best books Sanderson has written. It stands next to Way of Kings as the best the Stormlight Archive has to offer, and I almost considered placing it first! But I shall not be rash. This book does start out a little bit slow and it’s not perfect by any means, but oh boy the story it tells is a fun one. And once it gets going? It moves. All my favourite characters are at the top of their game here. Dalinar is fantastic, Adolin comes into his own, Kaladin has all his requisite ups and downs and I still love him…and this is probably Shallan’s best book. Which makes sense, since this is her book after all. I love seeing her grow here, even though sometimes she drives me crazy with her recklessness. But she is fantastic. The interludes are fun and worthwhile (always so many good nuggets to unpack!) and though parts of this story confuse me here and there as I don’t always remember all the Stormlight lore, I still love seeing how everything gradually starts to come together. This book is definitely one of the best books Sanderson has ever written and I’ll always be happy to return to it for my fantasy fix.

60. Rejoicing in Christ by Michael Reeves. Sometimes one just must meditate more upon the person and work of Christ, you know? Recently a dear friend recommended this one to me and it has been a joy to read it – slowly! – over the past few months. A book like this is almost devotional in nature, really. Don’t gulp it quickly. Enjoy, savour, meditate upon the truths unpacked about Christ in this really rather small work. At times the prose in this one can be rather purple and I winced a few times at the florid phrasings…but I am almost certainly the last that should accuse others of such. Grateful for those who write such works as aids to necessary and encouraging meditation upon Christ. Reading a book such is this is far more profitable than most things we tend to fill our time with in this day and age.

61. Five Points – Towards a Deeper Experience of God’s Grace by John Piper. A slim volume extolling the truths and virtues of God’s sovereign grace. At first blush, it may appear this book is simply a defense of what is commonly called “Calvinism” – a system of soteriology commonly tied to reformed theology. And perhaps in a way it is, but it is certainly not attempting or trying to mount a comprehensive defense of the doctrines of grace. Instead, Piper here seeks to illuminate and introduce the reformed understanding of salvation to those who may not fully understand it. I would recommend this book heartily to any – Christians or non-Christians alike – who seek to understand more what the Bible teaches about the way of salvation. Piper seeks to increase our devotion to God and joy in our knowledge of Him as we more fully understand what God has done for us and the salvation that He calls us to. Understanding these truths should not result in a dour and combative Christian – oh no! – but rather a deeper understanding of God’s way of salvation should bring overwhelming thanksgiving and joy to those who know themselves to be a child of God! I will not summarize this book – yes it talks about the infamous “Five Points” of Calvinism, and yes, it gets slightly technical at times. Even so, sometimes I wished for a more intense and deeper dive into what the Word says about salvation. That’s not what this book is. This book is an introduction into the beliefs of reformed soteriology and attempts to kindle our love for God afresh as we learn more about Him. This is not merely an academic pamphlet. This is a work written to increase our devotion and faith in the love of our Lord, encouraging us as we walk this path our God has placed before us. Grateful for works such as this, am definitely eager to read this one again at some point soon.

White and Grey and Love Unbounded

Happy Saturday friends!!! I have but a few minutes before I need to start getting ready for wedding, but…thought I could write a few words! I’m currently here in the Frozen North, which deserves its capital letters because it truly is Frozen up here in Calgary right now. -17 F(-27 C) and snow flakes slowly whirl past the window of my hotel room…

Of course you may ask – why am I in Canada right now? Well…Robbie is getting married!!! Such a dear friend, even though I haven’t been able to hang out with him as much as I wish I could. But we’ve had many adventures – from Isle of Man to Boston to Vancouver! And now…he’s beginning one of the biggest adventures of all…marriage to his soon-to-be wife, Natasha. So I shall soon witness this glorious wedding and it shall be wonderful indeed! And while I rejoice with Robbie and Natasha…I do look forward to the day that shall be more glorious than all others – that day when we shall sit down at the wedding supper of the Lamb. Oh for that beautiful day!! Come quickly, Lord Jesus.

And now…I suppose I should start getting dressed for wedding. Had a nice little breakfast here in hotel, and then because I was tired of staying indoors, braved the wintry blast of outside and walked down to Tim Hortons and got a nice yummy chocolate donut and blissfully hot coffee. Mmm so good. Now in my hotel room warming my toes and enjoying looking out at the white blanket upon this city of Calgary. Frozen outside and warm and cozy inside. This world so often seems cold and dark…remember the light and rejoice in the love of our God.

Peace and love.

Christmas Day

Hello friends and…Merry Christmas!!! I am now sitting here on the couch in Tampa home and honestly don’t have long to write as me, Caisson, Laura and Maryanne are about to embark upon our third Pandemic game of the holidays and hopefully we can actually win this time because annoyingly enough we have not quite conquered it yet – and oh it must be conquered! – but before we do begin the game thought I’d write for a few minutes and chronicle the day a bit as it’s been a typical and perfectly lovely Christmas Day thus far…begun with nice hot coffee and reading time(also on aforesaid couch) and then we proceeded into the living room and opened many gifts of which I received far too many nice things(including many wonderful shirts and comfy pajamas from Mom and Dad…and a Beatles record from Maryanne…and Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ album from Laura and Caisson…and a Kvothe Kingkiller shirt from Laura and Caisson…and a few yummy looking books…and a box of (unopened and sealed!) baseball cards from 1989 from Dad…and some exciting new(old) movies from Mom and Dad(‘Talk of the Town’ with Cary Grant and Jean Arthur and Ronald Colman and ‘Random Harvest’ also with Ronald Colman and Greer Garson – and yes I may be slightly too excited by these old classics that I’ve never seen!)…and I got other things but I shall not name anything else but just must say how kind and wonderful my dear family is to me…and of course after opening gifts we enjoyed Mom’s cinnamon rolls(which were delicious and amazing!!) with nice crunchy bacon…and then we played our new invented game of Diamonds for a while in which sadly me and Laura were not able to win…and then finally I read one of my new books from Maryanne(‘Black Prism’ by Brent Weeks) here on the couch for a bit and following that me and Dad and Maryanne went for a little walk and enjoyed being outside on this Christmas day. Now is this previous sentence far too long and awkward? Well of course, but it’s fun to be silly and awkward now and again. Being with the family here is wonderful and I can never stop thanking God for placing me in this family – I am blessed far beyond all I can even comprehend. My heart is full and I cannot express in words what music is in my soul.

Merry Christmas, one and all – love and peace and joy abounding.

All The Tea

So…I had written a nice post here but sadly my phone decided to kill it. Tragic!! So…short post instead. Here at airport pre flight to Florida, eagerly awaiting my breakfast of eggs benedict and ham and potatoes. Yes, most proper and I am excited!! Even though I am sleepy and thoughts hazy. Now…food has arrived so peace and farewell!!

No Ticket

A little couple sentence post is in order, I think! I’m feeling a bit under the weather today(I guess my body is angry at me for not sleeping enough???) and so decided to not go to concert tonight. Instead, a restful evening ahead! A dinner of meatloaf and mashed potatoes and green beans…and then an early bedtime so that I don’t mind (as much) waking up early for flight tomorrow. One day from now, I will be in Tampa, hanging out with Dad, Mom, Laura and Caisson! Can’t wait. Peace and love, dear friends.

Fields and Flocks and Flurries of Fresh-Fallen Snow

So it’s a nice(albeit far too warm) Tuesday morning and I’m rather hyped that this is my last work day of 2017! Tomorrow I fly off to Tampa in the early morning and then it shall be a nice long holiday with family. Shall be lovely. This morning I’m rather sleepy after enjoying the Rockets game last night with James(120-99 victory over Jazz – 14th W in row!) and while I (sorta) wish I could say tonight would be a night of rest, alas it is not to be. Going to local Heights Theater to see Julien Baker play a show – she’s a new artist that I discovered recently(one of her songs is the closing track on my latest mix CD – Tears of Nienna – for which I will attempt to post track list at some point)…then last week, was walking down 19th past the theater and I saw them advertising her show! It’s rare I get to see an artist I know in such a nice small venue…so I’m excited!! It does mean that I will yet again get no sleep tonight. Ah well. I’ll sleep on the plane tomorrow, I guess. Now – I suppose it’s time to start work soon. Going to heartily enjoy my peppermint mocha – saw Katie at Starbucks today and she gave me a free one…yay, Merry Christmas, Katie! I realize this entry is quite all over the place…but I’ll not attempt to edit. Thus is my early morning stream of consciousness. Have a most lovely day, one and all!!

The Tears of Nienna

It has been ten days since my last update. Unconscionable. And even now, I don’t have long to write, but thought I’d say something briefly. It is one week until Christmas! And two days until Florida! Yay to both!!

And now as I sit here, one more Monday with my peppermint mocha…it is good to rest in the peace of God. I had a good morning(although too brief!) reading a few words…namely in Psalm 18, Proverbs 18 and then the end of Isaiah. Oh so sad to be done with Isaiah(epic book that it is!) but am excited for Jeremiah coming up next. Anyways, just a few brief thoughts…

“I love You, O LORD, my strength.”

Verse 1 in the beautiful Psalm that is 18 starts out with something that we should all echo. A love for the Lord our God. May that be the prayer of our soul each and every day, each and every moment. No matter what else surrounds or what else comes – “I love You, O Lord, my strength.” That love that we offer to our Lord – weak and feeble it may be, but still let it be our cry! And we see the psalm progress very rapidly into recounting a time of misery and depression and utter peril. David was terrified, encompassed by death, surrounded by the grave, confronted by danger on every side. These verses have oft comforted me in my own peril, little though it may be. I can be despondent, but then I see David’s own dire situation. And what was his response? In his distress he called upon the Lord. He called upon God Himself. Such a simple thing to do and yet too often we fail to consider the mercy of our Lord when we are myopically gazing into our own depths of despair. And so David calls upon God. And then? God heard His voice. His cry for help rose up into heaven and God heard. And then? Well I shan’t go and recount the whole rest of the psalm – because you should really read it yourself – but the first line of verse seven really says it all. We know that David was in trouble. We know that David cried out to the Lord. We know that God heard his cry! And then…the earth shook and quaked. The Lord God Almighty took action. And when the Lord takes action…things happen.

And so I ask you – do you cry out to the Lord? The Lord works – even as we may not always be aware of such and even as the work which the Lord does may not always be to our liking! – and so when we cry out to the Lord, we are heard and the Lord is not slow in keeping His promises to us. The Lord hears, the Lord answers. Awesomely.

One more verse…this one from Proverbs 18 – one of my favourites that I always enjoy reading:

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous runs into it and is safe.”

Truly the Lord is a refuge for us. Wherever we are, in whatever nerve-wracking situation we may be in…know that the Lord is our strength and salvation, truly! Run to Him. Go to the Lord and find peace in the arms of our Savior. He shall truly never let us go.

And in times when it can be difficult to understand how God will work or what he will do to make your unbearable situation any different…remember the deeds of the Lord in your life. Look back to the greatest miracle of them all – your salvation. In the depths of your sin and sorrow – was there anything you could do that could save you from yourself? Was your arm great enough to pull yourself out of the pit? Was your strength enough, your spirit enough, your will enough? When you had no hope…what else was there to do but cry out to the Lord? And that cry, the Lord heard. And that cry, the Lord answered. Over two thousand years ago, in fulfillment of prophecy and as the greatest miracle this world had yet seen, the Lord God Almighty took action. God Himself came down to earth in the form of a man to do what else could not be done – to save our souls from hell itself. And that salvation is freely given. To us. Cry out to the Lord in deepest sorrow and repentance both. Run to Him – our Lord and our God! And know that in the belief of who God is and what He has done for us – you shall be saved.

And so now that we think our trials and tribulations are so daunting and fearsome…just look back at the miracle God performed to grant that we – the foulest of beings – might be reconciled to the Holy One. And if that miracle can be performed(and it was), then be not afraid. Nothing can separate us from the love of God.

(Pardon this unexpected digression…sometimes it just happens, I suppose)

All praises to the One who saved us from our sins. Peace and love.
